In eighteenth-century Paris, the most treasured porcelains came from the East, and the city’s finest gilders gave them a second life in mounts of gold. Raised on scrolled feet, framed with chased rims and curling handles, a simple vessel became something fit for a salon. This pair carries that tradition forward.

Both pieces share an ivory body veiled in fine crackle glaze, a web of hairline veins recalling the celebrated crackled wares of the Song dynasty. Across each, a songbird takes flight among flowering branches: a blue-winged bird rising along the tall amphora, a red-breasted one crossing the wide bowl. The painting is sparse and unhurried, leaving the porcelain room to breathe.

Gilt mounts in the French rococo manner complete the conversation. The amphora stands on a square plinth, its handles climbing like young vines. The centerpiece bowl rests on a pedestal with four scrolled feet, its rim edged in a fine scalloped band.

Together they compose a quiet still life. Set the amphora at one end of a mantel or console and the bowl at the center of a dining table or sideboard, or group them as a single vignette beneath a mirror. Leave them empty, or bring them alive with fresh branches, moss, and dried botanicals.
