In the great tradition of French furniture making, the chair back was never merely structural. It was a statement.

The Rococo craftsmen of 18th-century France understood that a chair seen from behind, across a salon or a dining room, was as important as the same chair seen from the front. The pierced scrollwork back of this side chair is conceived in that spirit. Three interlocking carved scrolls rise from the seat rail to a central trefoil crown, the negative space between them as considered as the wood itself, a composition that is simultaneously architectural and organic, disciplined and exuberant in the manner that only the Rococo could manage.

The frame is finished in deep espresso with gold leaf detailing along the carved edges, aged to the particular warmth of something that has been handled and admired over a long period of time. The seat is upholstered in a tobacco and amber floral cut velvet, bordered with brass nail head trim that draws a clean, formal line between fabric and frame.

At 104 centimeters tall, this chair commands its position in a room. At a dining table, in a bedroom corner, beside a console in an entrance hall, wherever it is placed, it is always the most interesting thing nearby.
