The Méridienne was conceived for a particular kind of afternoon. Not the productive afternoon, not the social afternoon, but the suspended one, the hours between obligation and evening when a person of taste might arrange themselves on a piece of furniture specifically designed to make rest look like an art form.

This Méridienne takes that idea to its logical extreme. The high end rises to a crest of pierced and gilded acanthus scrollwork, carved with the density and freedom of the Rococo tradition at its most confident, silver and gold leaf applied to a composition that seems to move even when it is still. The frame curves continuously from the carved crown down through the rolled arm to the lower end, a single unbroken line that the Rococo craftsmen understood as the truest expression of elegance. The upholstery pairs a champagne button-tufted back with a gold damask seat, the two fabrics working together with the ease of things that were always meant to occupy the same piece of furniture.

At the foot, four gilded cabriole legs carry the weight of the composition with the practiced ease of furniture that has been doing this for three centuries.
