The frame is carved and gilded with the density characteristic of Napoleon III cabinetmaking, deep blue lacquer panels set against gold, scrolled arms terminating in carved rosettes, cabriole legs carrying the weight of the piece with practiced ease. The seat, back and armrests are upholstered in crimson velvet, button-tufted in the French manner, the color of private dining rooms and members' clubs and the kind of interiors that were never designed to be photographed but always designed to be remembered.
