There are colors that carry the weight of an entire civilization.

Imperial red is one of them. In the kilns of China's imperial courts, this deep cinnabar glaze was reserved for objects destined for the emperor's own apartments, a color so saturated with meaning that its appearance on a piece of porcelain was itself a declaration of rank. Combined with the black ground of the Famille Noire tradition, the rarest and most prized of all Qing dynasty decorative porcelain techniques, the result is a surface that commands a room before anyone has looked closely enough to notice the roses.

And then you notice the roses. A full bouquet of peonies, chrysanthemums and garden blooms rendered in polychrome against the black medallion, framed by gold arabesque scrollwork that traces the boundary between the red ground and the painted composition with the precision of a craftsman who understood that the border between two beautiful things requires as much attention as either one alone. On either side, a cast gilded bronze Guardian Lion ring handle, the ancient Chinese protector spirit, watches over the composition with the expression of something that has been doing this for a very long time and expects to continue.

This is the stool that anchors a room. The one that makes everything placed near it look more considered, more deliberate, more collected.
