In the private apartments of Versailles, the line between furniture and sculpture was never very clear. The finest pieces were both, conceived by craftsmen who understood that a room's most personal objects, the ones closest to the body, the ones that held a person in repose, deserved the same attention as anything that hung on the wall or stood on a pedestal.

This Méridienne belongs to that understanding. The frame is painted ivory and gold, decorated with hand-painted floral garlands that follow the curves of the wood with the ease of something that grew there rather than was applied, the blossoms moving from the heart-shaped crest through the rolled arm to the cabriole legs with a continuity that makes the entire piece feel like a single, unbroken gesture. The high end is upholstered in ice blue silk velvet, button-tufted, the depth of the tufting catching the light differently at every angle. The long seat continues in a blue damask of large-scale floral repeat, the two fabrics related but distinct, the way a well-composed room contains pieces that belong together without matching exactly.
