A hand painted landscape wraps across the serpentine front: distant mountains, a fisherman's boat, a pavilion tucked among willow trees. The scene is rendered in gold on a soft lavender grey ground, a color rarely seen in Chinoiserie furniture, closer to dusk than to the usual black or red lacquer.

Curved doors open on either side of a small drawer, the whole case supported on gently splayed legs finished in gilt. The gold trim follows every curve of the case, tracing the serpentine line rather than sitting flat against it.

At 119cm wide and 52cm deep, it holds its own as a dining room sideboard or a living room storage piece, substantial enough for everyday use, detailed enough to be the focal point of the room.
