Of all the symbols Napoleon's Empire chose to surround itself with, the swan was perhaps the most personal. It was Joséphine's emblem, carved into the furniture of Malmaison, painted onto Sèvres porcelain, woven into silk. In the hands of the great ébénistes of the First Empire, the swan stopped being a decorative motif and became a structural element, its neck the natural curve of an armrest, its body the support of a seat, its gilded claws the feet that met the floor.

This bench is that idea at its most complete. Two swans face outward from either end, their necks arching to form the armrests, their silvered bodies rendered with individual feather detail in the Silvered and Parcel Gilt manner of the highest Napoleonic court furniture, white and silver for the plumage, gold for the bill and claws, a combination that sits somewhere between sculpture and furniture without fully belonging to either. Between them, a deep teal velvet cushion rests on a seat rail painted with a delicate band of hand-painted florals, the one moment of color in an otherwise silver and gold composition.

Placed at the foot of a bed, before a fireplace, at the end of a corridor or simply in the center of a room that understands what it is doing, this bench does not wait to be noticed.
