The cheetah has never quite belonged to the domestic world. Too fast, too wild, too much its own creature. And yet for centuries, European collectors brought it indoors anyway, in paint, in bronze, in porcelain, because the finest interiors have always understood that a room without something untamed in it is merely a room.

These two sculptures capture the cheetah at its two most distinctive moments. The walking figure moves with the low, fluid authority of an animal that has never needed to hurry. The seated figure holds its ground with the stillness of something that sees everything and reveals nothing. Together they form a complete portrait of a creature that the great houses of Europe once kept in their menageries and their imaginations in equal measure.

Each sculpture is rendered in hand-painted porcelain with naturalistic detail, the amber and black of the coat built up with the patience of the Animalier tradition, the 19th-century European school of sculptors and ceramicists who believed that wild animals deserved the same artistic attention as any human subject. The oval base grounds each piece with the weight and finish of a proper collector's object.

At 78 centimeters in length and 62 centimeters in height respectively, these are not accent pieces. They are the reason a console, a library sideboard or an entrance hall exists.
