The Regency period produced a particular kind of furniture that no other era has quite managed to replicate. This settee and armchair set embodies that balance. The frames are painted in a warm vermilion, a color that the Regency craftsmen applied to their finest painted furniture with the confidence of a tradition that understood pigment as well as it understood joinery, decorated with hand-painted floral sprays and classical details that run continuously from the crest rail to the turned and brass-capped legs. The cane backs, woven in the traditional manner with a painted medallion at the center of each, bring a lightness to the composition that upholstered backs could never achieve, allowing the eye to pass through the furniture rather than stopping at it.
