The great dining tables of the 19th century were not set. They were composed.

In the houses of Europe's aristocracy and merchant elite, the Surtout de Table was the centerpiece of that composition, a permanent table installation that remained in place through every course, organizing the light, the crystal and the conversation around itself. The term itself, French for "above all on the table," speaks to its authority. Everything else on the table existed in relation to it.

This complete Surtout de Table brings together three elements conceived as one. The central Epergne Candelabra rises from a circular mirrored Plateau, its four tulip-form candle arms extending from a densely chased silver column, supporting a cut crystal bowl at its crown. The scrollwork, acanthus detailing and naturalistic flourishes of the silverwork are cast in the Victorian manner, theatrical without excess, formal without coldness. Below and around it, a 130-centimeter mirrored Table Plateau extends the composition across the full length of a dining table, its silver gallery border chased with repeating foliate motifs and corner mounts that anchor the piece with the weight of a serious object.

When the candles are lit, the mirrors do what mirrors have always done in the hands of the finest decorators. They refuse to let the light go.

For formal dining rooms, entrance hall consoles and grand interiors where the table is understood as a stage and every object upon it a performer.
