In the early 19th century, the bamboo form became one of the most coveted structural languages in English decorative arts. Not real bamboo, which was fragile and difficult to work with, but faux bamboo, wood turned and painted to replicate the jointed, tapering form of the Asian cane, applied to furniture frames with a precision that made the imitation more interesting than the original.

This side table is conceived in that tradition. The frame is constructed in faux bamboo, each joint and segment rendered with the naturalistic detail of craftsmen who had studied the real thing closely enough to improve upon it, finished in a warm tortoiseshell tone that gives the piece its particular depth. The two tiers, tabletop and lower shelf, are painted in vermilion lacquer with Chinoiserie landscape scenes, figures, pavilions and botanical details rendered in the manner of the Regency Japanning tradition, the same decorative vocabulary that appears across the companion settee and armchair.

Practical in scale, considered in every detail, this table works as a drinks surface, a lamp table, a display shelf or simply as the piece that completes a Regency interior arrangement with the quiet confidence of something that knows exactly where it belongs.
