This Louis XVI Vitrine Side Table belongs to that tradition. The mahogany frame is mounted with four hand-painted porcelain plaques depicting flowering branches, birds and rocky garden compositions in the manner of 18th-century French decorative painting, set within a geometric border of alternating ivory and rouge marquetry that draws the eye around every face of the piece. Gilded ormolu corner mounts, sabots and a single brass-handled drawer complete a composition of considerable refinement, the kind of furniture that rewards the person sitting beside it far more than the person walking past.
