In the Chinoiserie Japanning tradition, black was never a background. It was the protagonist. The lacquer craftsmen of 18th-century Europe understood that gold applied to black does not merely decorate a surface, it illuminates it, the way candlelight finds detail in a dark room that daylight would flatten into nothing.

This dining table and armchair carry that understanding into furniture of considerable presence. The table surface is hand-painted in the Japanning manner, flowering branches, blossoms and foliage rendered in warm gold and amber against a deep black lacquer ground, the composition flowing across the shaped top with the freedom of a painting rather than the repetition of a pattern. The pierced gilt apron below is carved with acanthus scrollwork in the Louis XV tradition, the structure of the piece as considered as its surface. The armchair continues the conversation, its black lacquer frame painted with the same floral vocabulary, enclosing a circular medallion back upholstered in deep forest green leather, button-tufted and brass nail-headed, the green and black and gold a combination that Jacques Garcia would recognize immediately.
