Of all the moments a swan offers, European sculptors kept returning to one: the instant before flight, wings lifted, neck extended, the body caught between water and air. It is the most difficult moment to render and the most impossible to forget.

This sculpture captures exactly that moment. The white porcelain body is modeled with naturalistic feather detail, the head and neck cast in gilded bronze with the precision of the Animalier tradition, rising from a gilded Empire base of laurel-leaf molding that grounds the composition with the formal authority of the Napoleonic court. Water reeds and lily pads at the base place the swan in its natural world, even as the gilded bronze lifts it into something altogether more permanent.
