The chaise longue was one of the great inventions of 18th-century France. Not a sofa, which demands a certain social uprightness, nor a bed, which concedes entirely to rest, but something in between, a piece of furniture that understood that the most interesting human states are the ones that resist easy categorization. Half sitting, half reclining, the person on a chaise longue is simultaneously present and elsewhere, available for conversation but not obligated to it.

This chaise longue belongs to the finest tradition of that form. The carved and gilded frame follows the Rococo vocabulary with the confidence of a craftsman who has internalized every curve, acanthus scrollwork cascading along the apron, shell motifs at the crest, cabriole legs ending in gilt scrolled feet, the entire composition moving with the fluid asymmetry that defines the Louis XV period at its most assured. The upholstery is a pale celadon damask, the large-scale floral repeat of the fabric giving the piece a grandeur that smaller patterns could not achieve, finished with brass nail head trim that draws a precise, formal line between the silk and the gold.
