Description
Description
The game table has always occupied a particular place in the history of the interior. Not the dining table, which belongs to obligation, nor the writing desk, which belongs to work, but the game table, which belongs entirely to pleasure, to the particular kind of focused sociability that only appears when four people sit down together with the deliberate intention of enjoying themselves.
This Mahjong table and chair set brings that tradition into the Chinoiserie Japanning vocabulary of early 18th-century England. The Queen Anne period produced some of the finest lacquered furniture ever made outside of Asia, craftsmen who had never seen China but had studied its objects with such intensity that their interpretations carried a beauty entirely their own. The table surface is hand-painted with Chinoiserie landscapes, pavilions, figures and flowering trees rendered in warm gold against a deep tobacco ground, framed by a geometric border that echoes the lacquerwork of the East. The carved and gilded apron, the shell-carved cabriole legs and the single drawer complete a piece of furniture that would be worth owning even without the game.
The matching armchair follows the same vocabulary without repeating it. The Queen Anne vase splat back is painted with a continuous Chinoiserie composition, the green leather seat providing the only moment of color in an otherwise gold and shadow palette.
Together they create a game setting that understands that how you play is as important as what you play.
Newly crafted in the European decorative arts tradition.
