The garden stool has traveled further than almost any other object in the decorative arts tradition. Born in the imperial gardens of China, where ceramic drum stools lined pavilion walkways and courtyard terraces, it arrived in Europe aboard the same trading ships that carried porcelain, lacquer and silk, and never quite left.

This stool depicts a scene of court ladies gathered in a walled garden, figures in silk robes arranged around a low table beneath flowering branches, the kind of scene that European collectors of the 18th century found endlessly fascinating precisely because it described a world they could imagine but never enter. The hand-painted composition wraps continuously around the drum form, framed above and below by borders of pierced coin motifs and raised stud detailing in the Chinese ceramic tradition.

Available in two colorways: Celadon, a soft grey-green ground that carries the composition with quiet elegance, and Noir, a deep black ground traced with amber and gold that gives the same scene an altogether more dramatic presence.

As a side table, an accent seat, a plant stand or a purely decorative object, the garden stool remains what it has always been: one of the most versatile and considered objects a collected interior can contain.
