Description

In the salons and private apartments of Second Empire Paris, the low chair by the fireplace was never an afterthought. It was the most coveted seat in the room.

The French called it the Chauffeuse, the warming chair, conceived for women who gathered close to the fire to embroider, to read, to conduct the kind of conversation that required proximity and a certain informality that the larger chairs of the formal salon did not permit. In an era when a woman's Crinoline skirt could occupy the space of three ordinary chairs, the low, compact form of the Chauffeuse was not merely practical. It was a social instrument, placed in pairs beside the hearth, presiding over the most intimate exchanges of 19th-century Parisian life.

This chair follows that tradition in two distinct characters. The Cognac Leather version is upholstered in aged brown leather with brass nail head trim and a dark walnut frame with bronze detailing, the chair of a private library, a gentleman's study, a room where the fire burns low and the conversation runs late. The Sage Velvet version is dressed in olive green fabric on a white and gold painted frame decorated with hand-painted florals, the chair of a French boudoir, a dressing room, a salon where the afternoon light comes through silk curtains and the day has no particular obligation to end.

The heart-shaped back, the shell crest, the carved cabriole legs, these are the signatures of the Napoleon III period at its most assured, furniture that understood that beauty and comfort were never opposites.

Newly crafted in the European decorative arts tradition.
