The octagonal form has never been accidental in the Chinese decorative tradition. Eight sides, eight directions, a shape that orients itself to the world with a completeness that the circle, for all its perfection, cannot quite claim. In the garden pavilions and scholar's studios of imperial China, the hexagonal stool was a considered object, its geometry as deliberate as its decoration.

This stool carries that geometry into the Chinoiserie tradition. Each of its eight faces is painted with a continuous landscape of cranes in flight, figures beneath palm trees, pavilions at the water's edge and herons at rest among lotus, rendered in the warm gold tones of Chinese lacquer painting against grounds that shift the entire mood of the composition. In Cinnabar, the scene glows with the warmth of a late afternoon, the red ground giving the gold an amber richness that deepens as the light changes. In Noir, the same landscape becomes something more theatrical, gold on black, the contrast as deliberate and as beautiful as ink on lacquered wood.

The lion-head ring handles on either side are cast in gilded bronze, functional in origin and decorative in effect, the kind of detail that rewards close attention.
