Standing at 209 centimeters, this Louis XV Chinoiserie Parquet Clock is conceived in the grand tradition of 18th-century European decorative arts, when the finest craftsmen of France looked eastward and found in Asian lacquer work a language of mystery and opulence that Europe could not resist.

The case follows the sinuous, sculptural silhouette of the Louis XV form, swelling and tapering with the confidence of Rococo architecture. Every surface is finished in deep black lacquer and hand-painted with flowering branches, exotic blooms and foliate compositions in the Chinoiserie manner, a technique the French called Japanning, born from centuries of European fascination with the decorative arts of the East.

Gilded ormolu mounts cascade across the case from crown to base. The cresting, scrollwork, acanthus leaves and shell motifs are cast with the density and drama of palace furniture, not domestic ornament.
