Description

In the salons of the Second Empire, color was never shy. Glass came from the workshops of Bohemia in deep jewel tones, and Parisian gilders dressed it in gold for rooms lit by candle and gas flame. Napoleon III interiors gathered such objects without restraint, and the great urn of colored glass became one of their signatures.

This lidded urn carries that spirit forward. Its amethyst body is cut through to reveal what lies beneath: a fine diamond lattice and a garden of open blossoms, glowing clear against the plum. Wide gilded bands, edged like lace, circle the shoulder and lid, while gilt scroll handles rise from either side and a flame finial crowns the composition. By day it reads as deep violet; at dusk, under warm lamplight, the cut glass begins to shine.

Displayed alone, either one becomes the focal point of a room. Placed together, the floor urn and its smaller companion create a layered composition in the manner of a grand European house.
